What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK, which stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a laser vision correction procedure designed to reduce or eliminate your need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. The cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, helps focus light on the retina at the back of the eye for sharp vision. LASIK improves vision by correcting the shape of the cornea in eyes that do not have light correctly focused on the retina.

Is LASIK Eye Surgery Safe?

Since it was invented more than 30 years ago, and FDA-approved over 20 years ago, LASIK has been extensively studied for safety and efficacy. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, LASIK has an excellent safety track record, with a complication rate below 1%.

At Desert Vista Eye Specialists, we prioritize your comfort and safety throughout the entire process. The surgery only takes about 15 minutes per eye, and during the procedure, your eyes are numbed to ensure you experience no discomfort. Our team can also answer any questions you may have during your consultation appointment, and you will be sent home with detailed postoperative instructions after the procedure is complete.

Vision Correction Options at Desert Vista

If you learn at your consultation appointment that LASIK is not an option for you, there may be alternative vision correction procedures that are suitable. Desert Vista Eye Specialists also offer photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) procedures to help you achieve clear, long-lasting vision. Our experts can help you determine which vision correction surgery is best for your eyes.

Your LASIK Procedure: What to Expect

Patients who visit Desert Vista Eye Specialists find LASIK to be a painless procedure that yields immediate results. Our team ensures you feel comfortable and prepared each step of the way.

When you visit our clinic for your initial consultation, our primary focus is to make you feel comfortable. Your Desert Vista LASIK surgeon will check your eyes to ensure that LASIK is right for you. If they determine LASIK isn’t right for you, they will offer other laser surgery options like PRK or LRI. This is also your chance to get all your questions answered, ensuring you feel prepared for the procedure ahead.

The actual procedure only takes about 15 minutes per eye. Your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic drops to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Once the procedure is complete, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home. Luckily, the recovery process is typically quick and easy, and you should be able to return to work, driving, and many day-to-day activities one day after your surgery. While complete recovery can take up to six months after the procedure, you should notice clear, crisp vision almost immediately. Your surgeon will provide detailed postoperative instructions to guide you through your recovery, and we will schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure you are healing properly.
